
Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May, 1861 in the city of Calcutta, West Bengal, India. His father, Debendranath Tagore, was a leader of the Brahmo Samaj. Tagore was educated at his home, however he was sent to England when he was seventeen for the formal education. Apart from his literary works, Tagore was managing his family estates and also took part in various social reforms and nationalist movements.
Tagore was a very successful writer of Bengal initially and after his poems being translated to English, his works was also rapidly recognized in the western countries as well. He was the voice of India’s Spiritual Heritage for the world.
His works as poet was very successful. Some of the famous poems written by him were Manasi in 1890, Sonar Tari in 1894, Gitanjali in 1910, Gitimalya in 1914, and Balaka in 1916. Most famous among them was Gitanjali. Few plays by Tagore are Raja in 1910, Dakghar in 1912, Achalayatan also in 1912, Muktadhara in 1922, and Raktakaravi in 1926. Apart from these he also wrote many musical and dance dramas, travel diaries, essays, and autobiographies. Tagore was also popular for his paintings and drawings. He had also given music to his own songs.
